Malaysia’s Malakoff eyes small hydropower projects in Uzbekistan’s rivers and canals
17 April 2025
Malakoff Corporation Berhad, Malaysia’s independent power producer, is exploring opportunities to develop small-scale hydropower plants on rivers and canals across Uzbekistan according to Dunyo.
Uzbekistan’s Ambassador to Malaysia, Karomiddin Gadoev, recently met with Malakoff CEO Anwar Syahrin Abdul Ajib to discuss potential collaboration in the renewable energy sector. During the meeting, Gadoev highlighted Uzbekistan’s vast untapped hydropower potential and invited the Malaysian company to participate in both small and large-scale hydroelectric projects across the country.
“I am very impressed by the reforms being implemented in Uzbekistan in the 'green' energy sector. Inspired by the results achieved and ambitious plans of your country, we are planning to visit Uzbekistan this year to explore opportunities for mutual cooperation,” Anwar Syahrin Abdul Ajib expressed strong interest.
Malakoff currently operates thermal power plants with a total capacity of 8,782 MW and renewable energy assets generating 173 MW. Incorporated in 1975, the company’s core business includes power generation, desalination, maintenance services, and waste management.
Expanding Renewable Energy in Uzbekistan
Uzbekistan is actively working to diversify its energy mix and boost renewable energy production. In December 2024, the country, with support from the World Bank Group, announced plans to launch a new solar power plant in the Khorezm region.
Additionally, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev inaugurated the construction of a 100 MW solar plant by French energy firm Voltalia in the Tuprakkala district during a visit to Khorezm in 2024. Once operational, the plant is expected to increase the region’s electricity generation capacity by 30%, fully meeting the annual demand of Tuprakkala district.
