Matrix Renewables expands into UK with two BESS projects
14 April 2025
Spanish renewable energy platform Matrix Renewables has entered the UK energy market by partnering with Green BESS Developments (UK).
The collaboration will advance two standalone battery energy storage systems (BESS) projects in Scotland.
Together, they are expected to provide 1GW of power and 2 gigawatt hours (GWh) of storage capacity.
The projects are situated at Eccles and Kilmarnock, along vital transmission routes connecting Scotland and England. Their locations have been selected for their strategic importance in enhancing grid reliability and to support the UK’s transition towards cleaner energy sources.
The agreement marks Matrix Renewables’ initial involvement in the UK’s growing energy storage and renewable infrastructure sector. The firm is supported by TPG Rise and sees long-term potential in the region.
Plans are in place to deliver more than 2GW of new storage and generation projects across the UK up to 2028.
This expansion would involve more than £1bn ($1.3bn) in investment and contribute to employment growth.
Both the Eccles and Kilmarnock installations will be connected to the grid by 2027.
Matrix Renewables Europe and Latin America managing director Sergio Arbeláez stated: “Matrix is excited to continue growing our European portfolio. Announcing our entry into the UK aligns with our investment strategy and further diversifies our technology mix.
“The UK is the most advanced market in Europe for standalone battery storage, and these projects anchor our in-country operations and development capabilities with a meaningful presence in the flexible generation space.
“Backed by our experienced UK team, we are committed to playing a long-term role in supporting and investing behind the UK’s transition to a low-carbon energy system.”
Matrix is currently holding advanced discussions with a prominent UK-based engineering, procurement and construction contractor.
Final decisions are being made on project specifications and delivery strategies.
Green BESS development UK board chairman Karel Nohejl stated: “We are pleased to conclude this partnership with Matrix, who will continue the development of these projects.
“Both Eccles and Kilmarnock BESS projects are a strategically important part of the UK’s green transition and will significantly contribute to grid stability. We wish Matrix all the best in bringing these projects through the construction phase.”
In January 2024, Emeren Group divested two BESS facilities in Italy to Matrix Renewables.
