Irish building materials company CRH has officially launched a 30 MW wind farm in Romania, aimed at powering its Medgidia cement plant and reducing its carbon footprint. This wind farm represents a significant step in the company’s sustainability efforts, being the first such installation dedicated entirely to powering a cement production facility.

The wind farm, which consists of five turbines, began construction in August 2023 and is now fully operational. Once at full capacity, it is expected to generate approximately 80 GWh of electricity annually. This will supply a significant portion of the Medgidia cement plant’s electricity needs and will help offset around 40,000 tons of CO2 emissions each year.

CRH, which operates in 28 countries globally, has committed to reducing its carbon emissions by 30% by 2030. This project aligns with that goal, as the company continues to invest in renewable energy sources to power its operations and support the global transition to cleaner energy.

By using renewable energy to meet a significant part of the cement plant’s energy demands, CRH is setting a precedent in the building materials industry, highlighting the potential for wind energy to contribute to more sustainable manufacturing practices.
