SUMEC to provide Ethiopia with mini grid stand-by power facility
14 August 2024SUMEC, a subsidiary of Sinomach, has won a bid to complete a World Bank-funded mini grid stand-by power project in Ethiopia.
Ethiopia has been plagued by a severe shortage of electricity supplies, with the country’s electricity penetration rate standing at about only 30 percent. Since a majority of rural areas in Ethiopia have no access to the main electric grid, a plan has been devised to build micro off-grid photovoltaic and wind energy stations and to use these for energy storage.

Together with its domestic business partners, Sinomach has taken into account the mini grid stand-by power project's geographical location and design demands and come up with a comprehensive solution integrated with photovoltaic, diesel and energy storage functions on the basis of sufficient solar energy resources.
The project comprises solar power, energy storage, fire prevention and control, remote control telecommunication, and emergency power generation systems.
SUMEC is expected to provide the project with its self-developed green, environmentally-friendly and low-noise diesel-driven power generation units as stand-by electricity sources. The mini grid system can achieve efficient allocation and smart transition between multiple energy sources through energy compensation and smart control technologies, enhancing the electricity utilization rate and guaranteeing electricity stability.
So far, Sinomach has arranged for over 30 sets of FIRMAN diesel-driven power generation units to be supplied to the mini grid stand-by project. Upon completion, it is expected to fundamentally resolve the electricity shortage faced by the Ethiopian people and advance the country's economic development.
