Diller Scofidio + Renfro unveils extension to The Broad art gallery in Los Angeles
5 April 2024
New York architect Diller Scofidio + Renfro has revealed its expansion of The Broad contemporary art museum in downtown Los Angeles, which it designed in 2015.
The plan includes a 55,000 sq ft building that will increase gallery space by 70%. There will also be two rooftop courtyards, a storage vault open to the public and an event area that can be used for concerts, multimedia installations, workshops and educational programmes.

The new building will have a sculptural grey façade that mirrors the interior of the original building. It will contain galleries on the first, second and third floors. The second will also host storage space, where works are available to be pulled from racks.
Elizabeth Diller said: “I think of the new building as a companion to the existing Broad. The pair share DNA, but each has its own character and purpose in constant dialogue with its counterpart.
“The original Broad was conceived as an unfolding experience starting in the lobby, traveling up the escalator piercing the vault, landing in the third-floor gallery immersed in the collection, then snaking down through collection storage on the way back to the street. The challenge of adding more space to the building was to retain this intuitive logic while introducing a set of new experiences.”

Construction is due to begin in early 2025, with completion to be completed before Los Angeles hosts the 2028 Summer Olympics.
The museum contains works by Jean-Michel Basquiat, Cindy Sherman, Roy Lichtenstein and Cy Twombly.
