Last call for Botswana’s 100 MW solar PV tender
24 October 2023
The Botswana Power Corporation, the country’s national power utility, launched a tender for a 100 MW solar PV project in Jwaneng, located in Botswana’s south. Power producers have until Oct. 31 to submit proposals relating to the development, financing, construction operation and management of the project.
According to the tender document, the procurement exercise is open to citizen-owned companies and non-citizen-owned companies. However, non-citizen-owned applicants must subcontract at least 40% of the work to citizen-owned companies.
The announcement does not include information about technical requirements for construction.
Botswana, a country deriving most of its energy from coal-fired power plants, aims to deploy large-scale PV through several tenders. In addition to this, the Ministry of Mineral Resources, Green Technology and Energy Security (MMGE) launched a net-metering scheme for rooftop PV systems in late 2020.
The landlocked country recorded an installed solar PV capacity of 6 MW at the end of 2022, according to the most recent estimates published by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).
