The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) signed a joint memorandum of cooperation with the OQ Group and Sky Energy Company to study the development of a facility to manufacture sustainable aviation fuel in the Sultanate of Oman. The signatory parties will identify the basic capabilities necessary to establish a unit in this field and build capabilities by benefiting from global expertise in this field. The memorandum of cooperation also stipulates examining the technologies used in manufacturing sustainable green aviation fuel.

The agreement was signed by Eng Naif bin Ali al Abri, President of the Civil Aviation Authority, Ghaleb bin Saeed al Mamari, Vice President of Alternative Energy Sector at OQ Group, and Oscar Meijerink, General Manager of Future Fuels at Sky Energy.

This strategic cooperation reflects the shared vision of the Sultanate of Oman playing a vital role in the production and use of green fuel by implementing joint plans aimed at achieving zero neutrality by 2050 and working with partners in this field, which allows for evaluating the best ways to enhance the green economy.

Al Abri stressed CAA’s continuous work to enhance efforts to reduce the environmental impacts of civil aviation activities in accordance with the Civil Aviation Law issued by Royal Decree No. 76/2019, which gave CAA the authority to issue regulations to protect the environment from the effects of civil aviation activities based on international standards and the legislation in force in Oman in coordination with the relevant authorities.

Meanwhile, Al Mamari said that this step reflects the continued exploration of the Sultanate of Oman’s promising potential in the field of green fuel, especially with regard to the possibility of producing sustainable aviation fuel, which contributes to reducing carbon emissions resulting from the aviation industry in the medium and long term. This, according to him, is compatible with the government’s plans to reach zero neutrality by 2050 and position the Sultanate of Oman as a global centre for green industries.

For his part, Meijerink added that this partnership reflects the efforts made by the Civil Aviation Authority and the OQ Group in promoting green fuel in the Sultanate of Oman, stressing the company’s commitment to supporting these efforts and harnessing its capabilities and expertise in the field of sustainable aviation fuel globally.
