25 MW/100 MWh battery storage project commissioned in Belgium
9 March 2023
Nippon Koei Co Ltd and Aquila Clean Energy EMEA have commissioned their 25 MW/100 MWh battery storage project located in Ruien, Belgium. The battery has been installed on the site of a former 800 MW coal-fired power plant and is aiding in improving the stability of the Belgian high-voltage grid. It is also operational in the short-term electricity markets.
Nippon Koei has been co-developing the project with Yuso since 2018 and has executed the project through full-wrap engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) with the assistance of Spie and Wartsila. The project is one of the first four-hour long-duration units in the European Union.
The battery's commissioning underlines the commitment of both co-owners to building sustainable and resilient infrastructure projects, as the world transitions to low-carbon energy. By repurposing the coal-fired power plant site for clean energy purposes, the project represents a model for the development of future clean energy infrastructure.
