New highways are planned for Morocco
8 February 2023
Studies are being carried out for two key highway projects in Morocco, while construction work is due to commence on another. One of the projects is for the 180km route that will link Marrakech with Fez and Meknès. The other project is for the 405km route that will link El Hajeb and Rissani.
Construction work will start shortly for the 104km highway linking Guercif with Nador. This project is important as it will boost transport to and from the Nador West Med port and forms part of the project to develop the facility.
These new highway links themselves form part of a wider programme of highway and transport infrastructure development in Morocco. The country's government is focussing on transport infrastructure as a means to develop the economy. In addition to the construction of new roads and widening works, maintenance works are also being carried out on existing links as part of the programme. Construction activity on roads did stall during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, but have now returned.
