Aecom and Jacobs win $8bn nuclear clean-up contract in US
1 November 2021
The United Cleanup Oak Ridge (UCOR) consortium has landed a 10-year contract worth $8.3bn to remediate the Oak Ridge Reservation site in Tennessee.
The team comprises American engineers Aecom and Jacobs, and controls company Honeywell. Subcontractors on the project include Environmental Alternatives, Longenecker & Associates, RSI EnTech and Strata-G.
Oakridge is a Department of Energy (DOE) site that covers around 35,000 acres and is located about 30km west of Knoxville. It has been an important nuclear facility since the start of the Manhattan Project, when it was used to process uranium 238 into the fissile U-235 isotope.
The site has two active industrial areas: Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the Y-12 national security complex. The consortium will work on these, as well as the East Tennessee Technology Park. It will also design and build a disposal facility on the site.
Karen Wiemelt, Jacobs’ senior vice president, said: “Jacobs has supported the DOE’s Office of Environmental Management’s mission at Oak Ridge since 2003. This award demonstrates how we live our values by delivering sustainable solutions that generate a positive environmental, social and economic impact in the communities where we live and work.”
The contract will replace one in the East Tennessee Technology Park operated by engineer URS and consultant CH2M.
