Officials at the Memphis International Airport have announced the new contractor for the next phase of the Memphis International Airport revamp project. Turner Construction Co received an MSCAA board approval to manage the third and final phase of the US$300 million centralized de-icing facility along Louis Carruthers Drive. The company, which was chosen over four other contractors, received the work with a low bid of US$11.5 million and an initial contingency amount of US$1.1 million or 10% for the project. According to an airport authority resolution, they have established a Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) goal of a quarter for the full term of the project’s contract.

The Memphis International Airport revamp project involves the construction of a de-icing building. The facility will include tenant-occupied office areas, storage areas, meeting rooms, a break room, restrooms, vehicle maintenance bays, and a control tower. Phase one of the project involved the construction of two taxiway bridges, the relocation of Louis Carruthers Drive, and one vehicle bridge. The bridges will allow vehicles and aircraft connections between runways at the airport, which is necessary for the consolidated de-icing facility’s operations. The second phase which is half completed involves the construction of the de-icing pads and associated infrastructure. The entire 3.3 million-square-foot deicing facility is expected to be finished by winter next year.

Turner Construction has more than 20 U.S. offices, including its Memphis location on Primacy Parkway. Turner Construction ranked as the tenth-largest general contractor in the Memphis area based on US$68.28 million in work performed by its Memphis office in 2020. The firm has about 50 local employees and approximately 10,500 in total. Glen Thomas, director of strategic marketing and communications, previously stated that the de-icing facility will provide a centralized location for airlines and cargo carriers to de-ice planes prior to take off.
