Nairobi City in Kenya to undertake US $11.1m markets upgrade

The Nairobi County government has set aside US $11.1m for upgrading city markets and construction of modern kiosks. The project which will be implemented in phases and is expected to begin in July.
According to the Nairobi County Fiscal Strategy Paper (CFSP), US $1.3m has been set aside for the first phase of the project. Out of the US $1.3m, US $232,126.28 will be used to set up new modern kiosks across 10 wards in Nairobi that include: Pumwani, Kware, Pangani, Kabiro, Dandora, Kariobangi North, Mowlem, Hamza/Maringo, Kangemi and Woodley/Kenyatta Golf Course wards.
US $185,701.02 will be used for the construction of a new City Park market, while the construction of Makina Market will take up US $157,845.87. US $139,275.76 will be used for the extension of Dandora E Market.
The renovation of Muthurwa Market will take up US $139,275.76, with the same amount used for the construction of a perimeter wall and sheds at Kamulu Market.
Water Boreholes
US $92,850.51 of the funds have been set aside for the drilling of boreholes at Westlands Market, installation and connection with reservoirs and networking. Furthermore, US $83,565.46 will be used for the construction of Karen Market, in a US $185,701.02 project.
US $29,062.21 will be used for the construction of abattoirs at Karandini market in a US $46,425.26 project. Moreover, US $9,285.05 will be used for signage for the new markets in Westlands, Karandini, Kangundo Road and Quarry Road.
Last month, the Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) announced that it had begun the upgrade of eight markets in the capital city to modern standards. The facelift involves the construction of modern stalls, parking areas, new-look ablution blocks as well as link roads to improve accessibility.
The markets include Muthurwa Market, City Park Market, Jericho Market, Wakulima, Uhuru and three markets along Kayole Spine Road in Embakasi, Landhies Road and Toi Market.
