FEC approves construction of 2nd section of Apapa–Oshodi expressway
2 May 2021
Nigeria’s Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved deals for the construction of five main economic arterial roads in the West Africa country, among them the 2nd section of Apapa–Oshodi expressway stretching from Sunrise to Cele bus stop.
If you recall, that section of the road has not been attended to in the past couple of years because the Federal Government was yet to award it to any company for reconstruction. However, following the approval of the five deals by FEC it is evident that this project will be carried out in a span of one year and three months by Julius Berger, a leading Nigerian company offering integrated construction solutions and related services, for a contract value of US$ 92.1M.
The current situation of the section in question
Commenting on the situation of the section of the road, Team Lead, Bulk Truck Operations of Honeywell Flour Mills Plc, Isreal Ogundiran, warned that unless immediate palliative work is done on that section of the road, it will become unpassable when the rainy season come in full.
“If that portion is not constructed now, especially that small portion between Sunrise and Berger, you will see containers falling anyhow during the rainy season. Note that during the dry season, the potholes on the road are visible but in the rainy season they are covered by muddy water and it is impossible to escape them,” explained Ogundiran.
“That is why we are asking the government to fix that portion of the road, so as to ease transiting from Apapa down to Tin-can and straight down to Mile2. We are also asking for palliatives on that portion of the road for vehicles exiting from the port so that the contractor will not be disturbed by rescues and evacuations,” he concluded.
