Skanska has broken ground on five new structures for Cordilleras Health System in Redwood City, San Mateo County, California in a contract worth $105m.

Once complete, the campus will be California’s first ever net-zero carbon emissions mental health campus thanks to solar panels on every roof, including site parking.

To upgrade a facility first built in 1952, Skanska will build four new mental health rehabilitation centres containing 16 beds each for long-term mental care.

It will also build a three-storey co-housing building for 57 transitional patients, with office space, a commercial kitchen and single bedrooms with shared living space.

Clients will also be able to control their own room environments and an air-to-water heat recovery system will allow for pre-heating of the domestic hot water system.

The buildings will be formed around a central open space with sheltered outdoor seating, community gardens, and recreation courts.

The project includes a large component of site work as well as the demolition of the existing building after the project’s completion.
