The state of Michigan has released a 5-year project plan for road and bridge construction with a set budget of US$4.17 Billion in 2021. The work is expected to support 45,6000 jobs. About US$3.6 billion will be used for system preservation projects, maintenance, safety programs and operation of the state’s trunkline roads and bridges. Another US$604 million in state, federal, local and private funds are budgeted to maintain Michigan’s Multi-Modal Program, which provides capital, operating assistance, technical support and safety oversight to the state’s air, rail, marines and ports, local and intercity bus sectors of the transportation system. The document spans from 2021 to 2025 and includes information about the department’s planned road and bridge projects, mobility initiatives and financials.

In Macomb County, I-94 eastbound will see a slew of bridge replacement and preservation projects taking place mainly in 2022 and 2025. Both the eastbound and westbound bridge over Salt River are scheduled for painting. On M-53, a few north and southbound bridge projects will take place in 2025 including deep overlay work, substructure repair and bridge barrier railing replacement. Some of those bridges include: M-53 over Clinton River Trail, the M-53 over Utica Road, the M-53 over Canal Road, the M-53 over 19 Mile Road, north and south. In 2021,  plans to complete an epoxy overlay for the I-696 ramp east to north over I-94. There’s fewer road repair and rebuilds planned for Macomb County than other counties in southeast Michigan. Reconstruction is planned this year for M-3, Gratiot Avenue, from 11 Mile Road to 14 Mile Road, followed next year by road rehabilitation from 14 Mile Road to Wellington Crescent Blvd.

The area will also have a host of new roads built to accommodate the new Gordie Howe International Bridge, a freeway-to-freeway border crossing between Detroit and Windsor, Ontario. The bridge will connect I-75 in the U.S. to Highway 401 in Canada with the new US$1.4 billion Rt. Hon. Herb Gray Parkway. About three-quarters of construction will take place between 2021 and 2023.
