Uganda: Kira-Kasangati-Matugga Road construction launched
5 January 2021
Kira-Kasangati-Matugga Road construction is set to begin following the groundbreaking ceremony officiated by H.E Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, the President of the Republic of Uganda, in Wakiso district.
The road is part of the outer ring road network to the north of Kampala City. It starts at Kira town roundabout running west-wards crossing the Kampala-Gayaza road in Kasangati and ends at the Kampala-Bombo highway.
The scope of the project
The project entails the upgrading of the Kira-Kasangati-Matugga road together with the Najjera-Buwate spur and the loop connection of the family access road from gravel to bituminous standard. It also entails dueling of the 2km road section from Kyaliwajjala to Kira from the current 2 lanes to 4 lanes with a median and provision of walkways and cycle lanes.
The project also concerns the improvement and upgrading of 5 junctions that include the Kitetika junction along Kampala-Gayaza road, Mpererwe junction along Kampala-Gayaza road, Erisa junction, and Gayaza junction along Kampala-Gayaza road.
Chongqing International Construction Corporation (CICO) will be the main contractor while Professional Engineering Consultants Ltd (PEC) in a joint venture with KKatt Consult Ltd will be the project consultants.
Expectations for the road
Once complete the road is expected to improve traffic flow within and around Kampala and Wakiso, easing connection to the trunk roads especially Bombo and Jinja Highways.
Uganda National Roads Authority Media Relations Manager Allan Ssempebwa noted that the project will also contribute towards the improvement of the safety of the non-motorized road users through the provision of cycle lanes.
He noted that in the long term, the project will serve to address the central objectives of the Government of Uganda, namely, poverty eradication and economic development.
